许烺光

行为科学家、心理人类学家

许烺光（Francis L. K. Hsu, 1909-1999），行为科学家，心理人类学创始人之一，第62届（1977-1978）美国人类学会主席。继韦伯、汤恩比之后，少数能够在大规模文明社会研究比较中，立下一家之言的大师。心理人类学主要创始人，对文化与人格研究的方法论进行了更新与换代，将大规模文明社会研究的知识向前推进了一大步。其理论对于本土心理学的发展、心理文化学的产生，具有深刻的影响。提供了非西方世界的、对人类行为研究的视角，对行为科学研究，有重大参考价值。

人物简介

1909年10月28日生于辽宁庄河。 1923年入南开中学。

1933年上海沪江大学社会系毕业，同年入辅仁大学研究所，后辍学在北京协和医院从事社会工作。

1937年考取中英庚子赔款奖学金，赴英国伦敦经济学院（London School of Economics）就读人类学，师从马林诺夫斯基（Bronislaw Malinowski），与费孝通乃同门师兄弟。

1941年取得博士学位，受费孝通邀请返国任教。1943年林顿（Ralph Linton）邀请赴美访问，前后担任哥伦比亚大学讲师（1944-1945）、康乃尔大学代理助理教授（1945-1947）。

1947年受聘为西北大学正式助理教授，十年后升为教授，并且担任人类学系主任二十年（1957-1976）。

1978年西北大学退休，随即被旧金山大学聘为文化研究中心主任，并且担任夏威夷大学东西方研究中心（East-West Center）资深研究员。

1982年再度退休，不过仍坚持从事讲演以及学术工作。1986年心肌梗塞，还持续论文写作，后又两次中风，不得不停止学术研究。

1999年12月15日病逝于旧金山，享年91岁。

人物生平

1909年10月28日出生于辽宁省庄河县的一个村庄，许烺光在家中排行最小，有二兄一姊。他四岁时随家迁往锦州市，六岁正式上学，从小接受新式教育。1929年，许烺光考入上海的沪江大学社会系，1933年毕业后进入辅仁大学研究所读研，期间上过史禄国（Shirokogorov）的课。不到一年，许烺光因经济原因从辅仁大学退学，随后进入协和医院社会服务部工作了三年，先后从事医疗社会工作和精神病社会工作。

1937年，许烺光考取中英庚子赔款留学奖金前往英国伦敦政治经济学院（LSE）读博，师从马林诺夫斯基（Malinowski），是费孝通的师弟。在伦敦期间，他和费孝通做过一年的室友，并与李约瑟（Joseph Needham）相邻相熟。在伦敦政治经济学院，许烺光修过马林诺夫斯基、弗思（Raymond Firth）及曼海姆（Karl Mannheim）等学者的课程。许烺光说，马林诺夫斯基是他今生遇见的最好的老师，最初也正是马林诺夫斯基的seminar引发了许烺光对心理人类学的极大兴趣。1938年，马林诺夫斯基前往美国耶鲁大学执教，于是许烺光转由弗思指导。1939年，许烺光以论文《中国表兄妹结婚》（Observations on Cross-Cousin Marriage in China）赴丹麦参加第一届国际人类学会议，参会期间结识哥伦比亚大学教授、《美国人类学家》主编Ralph Linton，后来这篇文章发表在《美国人类学家》。留英期间，许烺光给国内的《西风》杂志撰稿，向国内读者介绍英国见闻。1940年，许烺光进行博士论文答辩，答辩老师包括拉德克里夫·布朗（Radcliffe-Brown）和莫里斯·金斯伯格（Morris Ginsberg），最终许烺光以博士论文The Functioning of a North China Family获得博士学位。

毕业后，许烺光受费孝通之邀到云南大学任教，并进入费孝通主持的魁阁从事研究工作。1941年转至华中大学执教，期间遇见董一男，后结为夫妻。1942年，许烺光重回云南大学，并在费孝通访美期间担任魁阁工作站代理站长。在云南的这几年，许烺光做了很多田野调查，并写出了《祖荫下》（Under the Ancestors’ Shadow）和《驱逐捣蛋者：魔法、科学与文化》（Exorcising the Trouble Makers : Magic，Science and Culture）等著作。1943年，许烺光根据云南调查资料在美国社会学刊（AJS）上发表了一篇文章，讨论中国家庭中人际合作互动的关系，从此许烺光开始剖析中国人的角色与情感。角色与情感分析后来成为许烺光发展心理人类学理论的基础。许烺光没有听从埃文斯·普里查德（Evans-Pritchard）的建议去研究原始社会，也不满当时人类学亲属制度研究的狭隘视野，最终转向了大型有文字的文明社会的比较研究。

1943年，受哥伦比亚大学教授Ralph Linton的邀请，许烺光赴美讲学。他在哥伦比亚大学待了一年半，主持了一项有关中国农村的研讨课，期间还兼任美国劳工部的中国劳工问题顾问。1945年，许烺光在哥大的临时教职结束后，受邀前往康奈尔大学担任助理教授。1947年，许烺光在美国西北大学任教，成为西北大学正式聘任的第一位中国教授。到西北大学之后，许烺光开始撰写《美国人与中国人》（Americans and Chinese）。该书指出，美国社会的亲属关系以夫妻关系为主轴，而中国社会的亲属关系是以父子关系为主轴，两种不同的亲属关系对中美两国社会产生了显著的不同影响。

1955年底，许烺光访欧。在重访英伦期间，许烺光以《东西文化差异及其对世界的影响》为题发表演说，认为东西方最重要的文化差异是西方文化的个人主义或自力更生和东方文化的情境主义或相互依赖，两种文化应该相互学习，取长补短。访欧结束后，许烺光抵达印度进行田野调查。在驻留新德里期间，印度总理尼赫鲁会见了许烺光。1957年，许烺光结束了将近两年的印度之旅，后根据印度调查写出《氏族、种姓与社团》（Clan, Caste and Club）一书，对中国、印度、美国的社会关系与文化进行了比较研究。1957年，许烺光被任命为西北大学人类学系主任。

1964年，许烺光前往日本担任京都大学访问教授，并进行田野调查。后来他写出名著《家元：日本的真髓》（Iemoto: The Heart of Japan）。该书发现，家元是日本最独特也最重要的次级集团，与之相当者是印度的种姓，中国的宗族和美国的俱乐部。该书认为日本家元型人际关系的稳定性促使日本能适应现代工业与民族主义的要求，无需很大的心理文化上的重新定向，是战后日本经济奇迹的主要原因。该书是许烺光最成熟的比较研究著作，也标志着他对大型有文字文明社会的比较研究告一段落。

角色情感二元分析框架及社会心理和谐学说是许烺光大型有文字文明社会比较研究的理论基础。人的行为分为角色和情感两个范畴，角色指向实用性，情感指向个人感受。许烺光主张用比较研究深入探索人类情感。他提出了社会心理和谐（Psychosocial Homeostasis）学说，并创构了一个社会心理理论图式来解释人类的心理现象。许烺光将稳定的人格称为不变的人性常数（Human Constant）。不变的人性常数形成的过程即社会心理和谐的过程。每个人的行为都力图达成社会心理和谐。社会心理和谐学说反驳了个人主义和人性普遍主义的假设。

根据社会心理和谐学说，要理解人的情感，最重要的是理解其“亲密的社会关系与文化”。所以，许烺光以亲属纲常（Kinship Dyad）为基础来解释和比较不同社会的文化行为及趋势，在理论和方法上为大型有文字文明社会比较研究做出了贡献。许烺光擅长用优位亲属纲（Dominant Kinship Dyad）的分析模式来联结亲属制度与社会文化发展。他用弗洛伊德的心理分析方法扩展了人类学的亲属制度研究，以亲属制度为起点研究大型有文字文明社会，又增强了亲属制度研究的功能。总之，许烺光既推进了人类学亲属制度研究，又发展了弗洛伊德心理分析学说的解释力。因此可以说，许烺光先生开创了心理人类学(Psychological Anthropology)。

1972年，许烺光获准访华。他除省亲之外，还特意会见了吴文藻和费孝通。1976年，许烺光卸任西北大学人类学系主任。1977年到1978年，他当选第62届美国人类学会主席。1978年，许烺光从西北大学退休，退休文集《彻底个人主义的省思》(英文名Essays in Psychological Anthropology)总结了他多年的学术思考。其中，许烺光着重批评了美国社会彻底的个人主义（rugged individualism）。退休之后，许烺光转任旧金山大学教授并兼任文化研究中心主任。在他的努力下，1978年，洛杉矶美国人类学年会成立了心理人类学分会。同年，许烺光当选第12届台北中央研究院院士。

1986年，酷爱打网球的许烺光突发心肌梗塞，此后身体一直欠佳，1992年开始半身不遂。1993到1994年期间，许烺光口述了回忆录《边缘人》。1999年12月15日，许烺光先生逝世于美国旧金山，享年90岁。2002年，《许烺光著作集》（全9册）中文版在台湾出版。

成就意义

心理人类学主要创始人，对文化与人格研究的方法论进行了更新与换代，将大规模文明社会研究的知识向前推进了一大步。其理论对于本土心理学的发展、心理文化学的产生，具有深刻的影响。提供了非西方世界的、对人类行为研究的视角，对行为科学研究，有重大参考价值。

研究历程

许氏是多产又充满精力的学者。在研究视角上，他强调社会与文化因素对人类心理的影响，创立了心理人类学这一门学科；坚持以“比较分析法”（comparative approach）从事大规模文明社会研究。他最早以中国与美国为研究对象，后来又陆续加了入了印度与日本两个社会，曾花了大量时间在昆明（1941-1942、1942-1943）、夏威夷（1949-1950、1970-1971）、印度（1955-1957）、日本（1964-1965）等地从事田野调查。得到洛克斐勒基金会、温纳格伦基金会、社会科学研究委员会、卡内基基金会等资助，从事学术研究。

许烺光心理文化学研究会是由北京大学国际关系学院尚会鹏教授发起的一个学术团体。成立宗旨，在于联合国内乃至于全世界对许烺光（Francis L. K.Hsu）的心理文化学理论感兴趣者，形成一个定期交换意见、讨论心得、分享成果的一个团体。

北京大学文化与国家行为研究中心是在许烺光心理文化学研究会基础上发展起来的一个从心理文化学视角研究国家行为的学术机构。本中心致力于整合北京大学校内外相关领域专家、学者的力量及学术资源，联结国内外有关政府部门、企业，努力构建一个跨学科、跨领域的研究平台，最终建成在世界上具有影响力研究人的行为、集团行为、国家行为的学术研究与交流、人才培养及咨询服务基地。
